A metronome plays a steady pulse so that you can practice and record in time. This one schedules every click on the audio clock of your browser, so the tempo does not wander the way simple timers do.

What Can You Set?

  • Tempo: 30 to 300 BPM, with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, by typing a number or by tapping.
  • Time signature: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 and 7/8. The first beat of each bar gets a higher click.
  • Subdivision: eighth notes, triplets or sixteenth notes between the beats, at a lower volume.
  • Accent and volume: switch off the accent on the first beat for an even click, and set the level.

How to Practice with a Metronome

Start slower than you think you need to: choose a tempo at which you can play the passage without mistakes, then raise it in steps of about 5 BPM. Switch on a subdivision when the notes between the beats are uneven. If you know a song but not its tempo, tap it with the Tap button or the BPM Tapper, or measure it from a recording with the BPM & Key Analyzer.

Is the Online Metronome really free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up and no time limit. You can leave it running for a whole practice session.

How accurate is the timing?
The clicks are scheduled on the audio clock of the browser, not with ordinary timers, so the tempo does not drift. The exact moment you hear a click still depends on your device, and Bluetooth headphones add a delay.

What does the time signature do?
It sets how many beats make up a bar. The first beat of each bar gets a higher click, so you always know where the bar begins. In 6/8 the fourth beat gets a lighter accent as well.

What is a subdivision?
Extra, quieter clicks between the beats: two per beat for eighth notes, three for triplets and four for sixteenth notes. They help you place the notes between the beats evenly.

Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in the browser, without installing an app. On an iPhone, make sure the silent switch is off.

Can I use it as a click track for recording?
Yes. Listen to it on headphones so that the click is not picked up by the microphone, and avoid Bluetooth headphones because of their delay.

Do I need to install any software?
No. The tool runs in your web browser on computers, phones and tablets.
