How to Find the BPM of Any Song

Stop guessing. Learn the absolute foundations of harmonic mixing and creating mashups.

DJ Mixing Camelot Wheel

The Golden Rule of Mashups

Have you ever tried to put a rap vocal acapella over a different instrumental beat, but it just sounded terribly wrong? That is a "Key Clash." For two audio tracks to sound good together, they must share the same Tempo (BPM) and be musically compatible (Key).

Step 1: Finding the BPM (Beats Per Minute)

The speed of a song is measured in BPM. If Song A is 120 BPM and Song B is 128 BPM, they will fall out of sync instantly. There are two ways to solve this:

  • Automatic: Drop your file into our BPM Analyzer . The algorithm will scan the transients and give you the exact speed.
  • Manual: Use the BPM Tapper . Play the song on Spotify or YouTube, and tap your keyboard's spacebar to the beat. The tool will calculate the average tempo.

Step 2: Harmonic Mixing (The Camelot Wheel)

Even if the speeds match perfectly, a song in C Major will sound awful played over a track in F# Minor. Instead of memorizing complex music theory, modern DJs use the Camelot Wheel system.

The Camelot system assigns a number and a letter to every musical key (e.g., 8A, 9B). Check your analyzed track against our interactive Camelot Wheel . The rule is simple: You can seamlessly mix any track into another track that has the same number, or is exactly one number higher or lower.

Step 3: Matching Them Up

If you find that your acapella is slightly off-key or at a different speed than your instrumental, use the Pitch & Speed Changer to pitch it up or down by semitones until the Camelot numbers match.
