What is AAC?
Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is a highly optimized, lossy compression audio format. It is the modern standard used by many digital streaming platforms and devices. AAC reduces audio file sizes drastically while retaining a sound quality that is generally superior to older formats like MP3 at the same bitrates. Because it is a lossy format, some of the original, imperceptible audio data was permanently discarded when the file was initially created.
What is WAV?
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is the industry standard for raw, uncompressed, and lossless audio. Developed by Microsoft and IBM, a WAV file keeps every single bit of audio data intact. Because no compression algorithms are applied, it requires significantly more storage space but ensures maximum fidelity, making it the preferred format for professional recording studios, sound engineering, and mastering your original tracks.
Why convert AAC to WAV?
It is a common misconception that converting a compressed file to an uncompressed one will magically restore lost audio quality; it will not. The resulting WAV file will only sound as good as the source AAC file. However, converting AAC to WAV is a necessary step for professional audio editing. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and video editors operate optimally with uncompressed audio. Converting your royalty-free AAC audio to WAV before editing prevents further degradation (generation loss) that would occur if you edited and re-exported a lossy file multiple times. This conversion locks in the current quality and prepares the file for heavy processing, mixing, and mastering.
